‘Tonosama’ frogs, crabs, among others, frolicking in the pond…

Image

No, we did not buy any of these ‘tonosama’ (literally ‘King’) frogs…
They arrived at our pond on their own accord…
In the initial years, they were rather small but now, they are getting bigger…
Some of these frogs have gotten used to us and these three frogs seemed to be comfortable enough even as I was clicking away with my camera at a rather close range…
My sweeto haato is very fond of frogs and they actually have a good meaning in the Japanese context in that the pronounciation for frog is ‘kaeru’, which can be taken to mean ‘return’ as in ‘returning home safely’…

Image

And crabs too… no, we did not buy them from the pet shop…
As with the ‘King’ frogs, the crabs came to our pond on their own free will…
These shy creatures have since ‘settled’ down pretty much in our pond…

Image

This season witnessed the breaking of a new record with regards to water lilies…
I bought a plant from the local DIY some years ago and they flower one or two at a time, at most…
But five at the same time? wooh, nice…

Image

And yes, we did buy these comet goldfish…
This hardy fish has provided a lot of joy and pleasure for us…
If there is such a thing as an ‘investment’ in goldfish, we’d be pretty ‘rich’ by now…

  1. Hi Lrong, haven’t been here for a while. How are you and Yoshimi? I laughed at the frogs but most specially the crab. I wonder where the crab came from as it is terrestrial around the pond. It’s not unusual for from but the crab is awesome. Now i have to tell you, that there was a hermit crab I saw at the tile floor of the toilet this morning, I kept it for Allen who loves these things, later on they said it has been thrown already outside. It only means it came back, hahaha! I also told Allen and his mother how hermit crabs change their shell, and they are both awed! Best regards.

    • Thank you for coming by, Andrea… Yoshimi and I are doing quite well despite the stifling summer heat in Japan…
I enjoy reading about the hermit crab episode… the crabs at my place, I am not sure where they come from… perhaps from the sea nearby… your discovering a hermit crab at the toilet…. 🙂 perhaps later on, Allen can venture in marine biology?

  2. How big is this pond? Is this located in japan or Malaysia? Hmm..I wonder how did the crabs come to your pond by yourself? Is your pond adjoining some nature? It’s fascinating as I would really love to learn nature;s mystery.

    • The size is about 1.5 meter by 1 meter, and about 50 cm deep… it is located in Japan, where I live now… the crabs just came out of nowhere, and yes, there are padi fields and forests near my home… it is fascinating to me too…
